In Toronto, I was on a prepaid plan. I have had my Fido Sony Ericsson since 2004. I paid $10, maybe $15 a month for a prepaid voucher? Got 30 minutes with $10.
Here, there are half a dozen major phone companies. Phones cost as little as £10 and you can get a Pay-as-you-Go SIM for £10 as well and away you go with 100 free minutes, or 300 free texts and 500MB of data in addition to your 25p a minute and 15p text plan. Incoming calls are always free and the outgoing rate is more or less the same to call phones all over the UK ("long-distance" calling means calling outside the country).
I wanted something I could navigate a new city and new social contacts what with a completely new social circle and new workplace, so after some comparison I bought a Samsung Galaxy GT-S530. £50 ($75) including tax seemed like a pretty good deal, eh? No contract. I got a £10 O2 SIM that gives me 300 free texts and 500MB free data. Outgoing minutes will be deducted from that £10 at 25p a minute. Not bad. Now I'm an Android user... Ack!
The downside of these cheap plans is that every 11-year old has a phone and they are a big problem in school!
